7 Books I’m Most Excited to Read in 2023

Fascinating new releases spanning multiple genres to sate the book lover in you.

2023 is here, and we look forward to a better year ahead.

Bookworms like me have already wish-listed the books I’m excited to read.

In this post, I have curated a list of the seven books I’m most excited to read in 2023. The briefs of these books are out, and they have helped me choose which ones I want to read first.

So here’s a brief glimpse of why these books sound so tempting. Fair warning: Your TBR pile will overflow with these brand-new exciting books.

1. Spare by Prince Harry

Expected Publication Date: 10th January 2023

Image: Goodreads

I’m a massive fan of Harry and Meghan, and I have to give it a shot when the former is writing a memoir. The title, Spare, is tempting, exciting, and cruel.

It was one of the most blistering scenes of the 21st century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their dead mother’s coffin as the world looked on in grief and horror.

As Diana, the princess of Wales was laid to rest, many wondered what must be going on inside the young princes’ heads and to what point their lives would take a turn from there.

With its relentless honesty, Spare promises to be an incredible memoir filled with insights, self-assessments, and wisdom about the immense power of love over grief. Considering all the angles, I’m hopeful it will be an excellent pick in my 2023 book wishlist. I can’t wait to get my copy at the earliest.

2. Homecoming by Kate Morton

Expected Publication Date: 4th April 2023

Image: Goodreads

I’m too excited about this one: Morton’s epic novel that spans generations and imposes a critical question: What should we be doing for the ones we love, and how do we protect the lies we tell?

On a Christmas evening, a local delivery person makes a terrible discovery on the grounds of a mysterious mansion. After a police investigation is summoned, the small town of Tambilla gets involved in one of the most shocking murder cases in South Australia’s history.

Fast forward to six years: Jess, a journalist, is up for a story. She receives a call back in Sydney regarding her grandmother Nora’s illness, who’s been rushed to the hospital: her grandmother raised her from her childhood when her mother couldn’t.

Jess is stunned to see her fragile grandmother in the hospital bed, who’s always been charming. Further information from her housekeeper reveals that Nora was distracted weeks before the accident takes things to another curiosity level.

Digging into Nora’s house, Jess discovers a crime book connecting to the long-buried police investigation of a murder case. With these sensational suspicious elements, the reader will undoubtedly be entertained throughout.

3. The Survivalists by Kashana Cauley

Expected Publication Date: 10th January 2023

Image: Goodreads

Another most anticipated pick in my 2023 book list is this darkly humorous novel from Cauley.

This is a brilliant piece, filled with wit and curiosity, and not scared to pose questions to the new generations of Americans like: Does it make sense to move up the corporate ladder? What does it take to survive in a nearly impossible world for young people to earn enough money to afford stable housing?

In the aftermath of her parent’s death, Aretha, a single black Lawyer, targets only one thing in life: success. And then, she falls for a coffee entrepreneur, Aaron. She moves in with him only to realize she has to live with his Hurricane Sandy-traumatised, illegal-gun-stockpiling, optimized-soy-protein-eating, bunker-building roommates. Aretha realizes her dreams to find a partner are fading away as the battle for an underground world takes over.

Packed with curious elements, I’m sure I will love this book!

4. You Need to Lose Weight And 19 Other Myths about Fat People by Aubrey Gordon

Expected Publication Date: 10th January 2023

Image: Goodreads

Honestly, this one from Maintenance Phase podcast co-host and Your Fat Friend creator Aubrey Gordon is the one I am most thrilled about!

This piece will take the readers through the anti-fat myths and provide excellent tools to take action on fat justice. The book shares with the reader facts and knowledge to remodel myths about obesity to discard the anti-fat bias that dictates how to treat fat people. The author will take us through the rhetorical approaches to encounter these popular myths and attack the anti-fat tendencies that often overshadow them.

There are a lot of discussions on fat justice around, and the book will surely be a gateway to informed conversations in research and history.

5: Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

Expected Publication Date: 16th May 2023

Image: Goodreads

Like the White Ivy and The Other Black Girl, Kuang’s chilling and hysterical creation is next on my wishlist.

Presented in a scintillating first-person voice, the story imposes critical questions on diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation.

Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu are twin rising stars: same year at Yale, similar debut year in publishing. However, Athena is a cross-genre literary buff, while June needed help to get a paperback publication. Nobody is interested in primary white girls’ stories, thinks June.

After Athena dies in an accident, June follows her impulse to steal the former’s just-completed masterpiece about the unsaid contributions of Chinese Labourers’ efforts during the 1st World War.

What if she edits Athena’s work and claims to the agent that it’s her work? Irrespective of the teller, this piece of history needs to be told as claimed by June, and the publisher agrees. However, some emerging evidence endangers her success, and June is ready to go to any lengths to keep what she thinks she’s worthy of.

6: The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese

Expected Publication Date: 2nd May 2023

Image: Goodreads

Finally, the long-anticipated new novel from Abraham Verghese is here, and I can’t wait to grab my copy. If you’ve been through his Cutting for Stone, you’d know what level of a masterpiece the author is capable of crafting.

Set in Kerala, the novel tenures the years between 1900 and 1977. It depicts three generations of a family that experience a weird affliction: at least one in each generation passes away due to drowning.

The family belongs to a Christian community that dates back to the apostles’ time. With shifting times, the “Big Mother” of the family sees unimaginable changes at home during her incredible life.

One of the most skillful authors in recent times, and I’m too excited to read this new book.

7. A Living Remedy by Nicole Chung

Expected Publication Date: 4th April 2023

Image: Goodreads

Last but not least is the classy memoir from Nicole Chung, the much-loved author of All You Can Ever Know. This book is a daughter’s quest to understand the lives of her adoptive parents, the energy she’s forged being an adult, and the life she has lost.

Examining the mighty strength of family bonds during tough times, the piece explores what’s required the reconnect the distance between two homes. It highlights some of the most miserable inequalities present in present-day American society.

Nicole belongs to a middle-class background, battling the persistent inequalities of society where a paycheck is often delayed till the end of the week or health insurance is mostly lacking. The premature death of her father due to diabetes and kidney disease infuriates Nicole about the unprivileged.

To make things worse, her mother is diagnosed with cancer. With Covid showering its curse on the world by then, a physical distance is created between the two.

Filled with tragedy and cruel realities, it’ll surely be worth reading.
