A Eulogy to You While You’re Still Alive

What if we were kind without them having to be dead?

If I could say anything to save your life
maybe write a eulogy when you are still alive
I would bleed at this poem till I am left with nothing
if only it would make you stop.

If I could gather all those people
who genuinely loved you at your house
and together, we could reminisce
all our shared love, our shared lives.
Maybe cry at the missed opportunities,
and laugh at all the times
we thought we wouldn’t make it
and yet, look at us — we are still here

we are still alive.

After we’ve had a nice meal
cooked with love at your hearth,
after we have held each other and parted
with shoulders drenched in your tears,

after we have given you all the love
we had kept guarded in our hearts for so long,

I wonder if you would still want to leave.

And if you did,
would it be without saying goodbye?
